Many ancient cultures understood the cosmos to be ordered in a particular hierarchy. The sky is the spiritual domain; the place where gods and spiritual beings reign. It conveys the transcendent, that which is outside of and greater than ourselves. Water indicates the dark forces of ungovernable nature, a place hostile to human beings. The land is both our home and the material of which we are made. My proposal in these paintings is that, when these three realms are in harmony, peace and beauty are created.
